Padel, a fast-growing racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash, is rapidly gaining traction in Aotearoa, and Pacific Padel is at the forefront of this movement.
Last week, several members of the Ashton Mitchell team took time out of the studio to visit Pacific Padel’s brand new Albany facility for an introduction to the sport. As Architects for Pacific Padel’s upcoming Merton Road, St John’s development, the day was a valuable opportunity to experience the sport first-hand and better understand the client’s aspirations for their growing network of clubs while having some fun as a team.
With Pacific Padel’s commitment to creating fun, vibrant, and social playing environments, it’s no surprise that their clubs are already drawing interest from curious newcomers alike.
The afternoon kicked off with a crash course in padel basics, delivered enthusiastically by the Pacific Padel team, followed by an action-packed Americano tournament. Despite some very rusty swings and a few lucky bounces off the glass, our Ashton Mitchell team had a blast competing and improving throughout the afternoon. A special congratulations goes to Simon, who took out the top spot in the Americano tournament!
The upcoming Merton Road facility, which has now received both Resource Consent and Building Consent, will feature eight courts, a fully equipped clubhouse with kitchen and changing facilities, and a viewing pavilion. Once complete, it will support both casual and competitive play and contribute to the growth of padel in Tāmaki Makaurau. We can’t wait to see the space come to life – and to hit the courts once construction wraps up.
